How old is your toothbrush

Replace it if it's 6months old despite good shape
Replace it if it's 3months old and the bristles are flared
Replace it if you notice coloured deposits at the base
Replace it if the bristles are hard with a medium textured brush
Get a cover for it
Do not keep it in your toilet
Do not share your toothbrush with anyone
Avoid rigorous brushing to prevent trauma
Do a twice daily toothbrushing with fluoride containing toothpaste

Toothache:a cause of death

Hole in a tooth (dental caries) is a common cause of toothache however fracture of tooth and trauma can also cause toothache.Progression of dental caries results in a dental abscess which also progresses to cellulitis if unattended to and ultimately pan cellulitis called Ludwigs angina.
Ludwigs angina is a medical emergency in which the airway is compromised by pus accumulation and edema necessitating tracheostomy otherwise death from suffocation .
This is a life threatening condition that is preventable with early presentation at the dental clinic.
Do not continue to endure the pain ,rather consult your dentist for solution to your dental problems.

10 tips towards healthy teeth

1. Brush twice daily

a) Last thing at bed time

b) Rinse your mouth in the morning before breakfast and brush after break fast

Or last thing at bed time and first thing in the morning and rinse your mouth after breakfast.

2. Scaling and polishing twice in a year, this affords you a regular check up with your dentist and early detection of oral diseases that may be present at the time of presentation.

3. Drink your juices with drinking straws to avoid tooth erosion

4. Avoid clenching your teeth in anger to prevent TMJ pain.

5. Do not use your teeth as an opener

6. Brush with a medium textured toothbrush with a fluoride containing toothpaste.

7. Avoid grinding bone, it wears away the teeth surface and results in TMJ pain

8. Do not suck lemon and orange with your teeth to prevent dissolution of tooth substances by acid.

9. Report all traumas to the teeth to your dentist.

10. Avoid the use of your teeth as a holding device, a scissors, or for defense.
