              Steps involved

Patients gum is protected from the caustic agent used for bleaching with Orabase gel.

Rubber dam is used as a protective covering for other oral tissues to prevent contact with the bleaching agent while only the teeth are exposed for the procedure.

Bleaching gel is applied with or without light activation

Gel is removed in 15 minutes and repeated twice with a final washing for optimum whiteningShades are rechecked as evidence of improved whitening of teeth with procedure

                  Home bleaching

       Your dentist takes an impression of your teeth for fabrication of a special bleaching tray that suits your mouth. This is to ensure that the tray is your size to avoid leakage of bleaching agent with use of oversized stock trays. With fabrication of a custom tray the bleaching agent is applied only on the teeth and none on the surrounding structures hence damaging effects are prevented.

      Peroxide gel in a kit is placed on the tray and patient wears for specified hours by the kit manufacturer. The peroxide is for home use is of reduced concentration compared to that used in the office for safety purposes while the time is extended to achieve desired result despite the use of a lower concentration of the peroxide.

              Side effects of bleaching

There are no deleterious effects rather short lived teeth sensitivity is experienced by patient necessitating reassurance by dentist as it will soon disappear.

Caution is required on application at home to prevent gingival irritation.
